Really... you should not be doing this like that...

Enter "Rambla de Oria, Almería, Andalucía" in Google Maps or Google Earth...

Will you have transport? You'll need it.

Take very careful note of what AndyH has said.

Depending on where on the Rambla you are considering - you could be talking of a 15 / 17 klm trip down an old river bed, this is kept as smooth as possible with scraping regulary - but at times during heavy rains it will have deep ruts and may even be unusable due to flooding making an even longer detour.

A good 4 x 4 would be advantageous.

Steve, we live in the rambla de oria and depending where the house is there are no bars or shops etc. It is a very quiet place to live. However if the house you will be renting is in the little village known as Mercedes you would be able to walk to little typical spanish bars, three I think. The run into Albox takes a minimum 10 minutes upto half an hour, again depending on the house. Some of that run will be on the Rambla (dry river bed) and some maybe on tarmac roads.

Default ramble de oria

there is far better places (NOW) to live and buy, consider the coast which has many bargains and maybe better access to airports etc, the area you are considering has NOTHING!!! Albox is next on the list, all the best

Steve,

I can only suggest you come out and have a nose around. Get a feel for things. Here's my (very personal) take on the area and some local places:

Albox: Very useful for things you need. Range of small shops, a few supermarkets, and specialist services. Lots of English speaking businesses/people. I don't want to offend anyone, but possibly not the most "picturesque" town in the area, though they are doing quite a lot of "prettying up" - not to everyone's approval, mind!

Mojacar: Coastal. Very nice little town. Gorgeous setting against the hills. Decent shopping. Nice beaches, bars, lots going on (in summer, at any rate). Gets very crowded in August! We have a house there and like it a lot.

Vera: In some ways, similar to Albox, but larger, and more "Spanish"! Also has large UK Ex-Pat community. Easy access to main roads, coast.

Arboleas: Some like it...not for me.

There are a lot of places to check... Bedar... up in the hills...Turre (not far from Mojacar), Los Gallardos (ditto). Taberno.....

All of these places have their pros and cons... I know it is difficult on a visit, but try to get a feel for the various areas. They are all very different. Obviously, you tend to get more for your money inland vs. directly on the coast, but prices all round are very good right now. It is a buyer's market.

I've known this area for about 16 years, and finally moved full-time 18 months ago. We like it a lot and enjoy life here. Regarding estate agents, yes... watch out... there are sharks about! Then again, same everywhere...
