It seems Spain can't quite make up there mind about lyrics for their national anthem the Marcha Real (Royal March). This morning I read in the NYTimes.com (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/15/world/europe/15spain.html?_r=1&ref=world&oref=slogin) they'd decided on these (translated to English - obviously):
Long live Spain!
Let us all sing together
With different voices
And a single heart.
Long live Spain!
From the green valleys
To the vast sea,
A hymn of brotherhood.
Love the Fatherland
As it knows how to embrace,
Beneath its blue sky
Peoples in freedom.
Glory to the children
Who give to history
Justice and greatness,
Democracy and peace.
-----------------------
Now it seems the Spanish Olympic committee has withdrawn them due a "lack of consensus" (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7191669.stm)
Interestingly the anthem has had lyrics (albeit unofficially) twice before, the first time during Alfonso XIII's reign and then a different version during the Franco era.
Are there other nations that don't have lyrics to their anthems? I don't know of any...
