Hola,

Just wondering if I'm the only one.....sometimes when I hear a good or different version of an original song, I get a better appreciation of the original.

For example, just heard 2 great but widely differing covers of an old Kate Bush song...Running up that Hill.

One version by a dutch band called "Within Temptation" and the other using a male vocal by the band "Placebo".

Anyone else found the same.

There you go mods.....a serious thread......think I need to go lie down for a bit.:D

Hello mikeyj,

Kate Bush you say, needs a cover song so you can understand the words!

We do like Mrs.Bush though, have to say, not so sure about the last album though.

I get your point, but can you name a cover version that has been better than the original?
--- coz I can't think of one.

My sentiments entirely I do not know of one cover version which has been a patch on the original - I think it's down to ' not so good ' artistes trying to cash in on brilliant performers work - ' Old Blue Eyes ' for example must still be spinning in his grave after Robbie Williams attempt to cover his great version of songs

Well, I have heard many songs that are better than the original!!
My first choice would be the absolutely incredible version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah by K D Lang. Have a listen….youtube…..but hey, each to their own!!

I can also think of a few where I prefer the cover to the original.

Probably the best known version of "I Put a Spell on You" is by Nina Simone, but the first version I heard, was when Van Morrison covered it with Them (it's still my favourite version).

The original was by Screamin' Jay Hawkins - cool, definitely weird and gives a different perspective to the track, but it's my least favourite of the versions that I've heard.

Hola,

Well I thought that that was my point, I had just listened to 2 versions of Running up that Hill, both of which were very different, very good in their own way and it made me appreciate Kate's original track even more.

My point is that some artists do a better job than the original!!

One only has to listen to pinups by David Bowie.
All songs on this album are covers… and I consider ALL are better than the original,
although I have never heard "Sorrow" – cover of a song by The Merseys
or Everything's Alright" – cover of a song by The Mojos.
But then again Bowie is Bowie….a musical God……

Hola,

Okay then......how about "Love is all Around", covered by Wet Wet Wet (remember 4 weddings), originally performed by the "Troggs".

Hello,

How about "Whiskey in the Jar" given it's rock version by "Thin Lizzy", which is actually a traditional Irish folk song covered by a multitude of artistes?

All righty then...what about Blowin in the wind by Where's mi satellite dish!!
What a great cover that was....

But I must admit, although some artists do better versions than the original, one
must remember that if the original lyrics/musical notes hadn't been written in the first place, there would be no cover versions....
So,....party on dudes...

Hola,

One of the many gems from Esther Rantzen's former right hand man....Doc Cox......"The Winker's Song" by Ivor Biggun and the Winkers, also who can forgot the infamous "Hide The Sausage" from the Album "The Fruity Bits".
