Hola,

Having witnessed the latest flooding this evening, I was just wondering what the authorities have in place for any poor soul that has a medical emergency for example, there is no way a vehicle could drive up the Rambla, there are many folk that live legally up and away from the actual old riverbed before any wisecrackers reply, that would be in a terrible predicament.

Hello,

Anyone stupid enough to risk this fate, deserves this dilemma, why should you believe it up to the authorities to save you!

Emergencies can happen in any place any time.
There is risk all over the world and in case anybody is totally cut off from forms of information, major cities both in Spain and many places in the world, including UK have had and will have flooding.

During the floods in UK last year, just as a for instance we watched on the telly many people being lifted out by helicopter, that´s what emergency helicopters are for.

One just has to hope that such a fate does not happen to anybody, in any rambla or any other place in the world where there is flooding, earthquakes or any major disaster.

The last post was in very bad taste in my opinion

It is one of the disadvantages of living in a more remote location. There is never any guarantee that we are all safe in a natural disaster.
Very heavy rain is incredibly damaging here in hilly / mountainous regions and can cause building collapses, road damage and obviously, flooding.

A year or two ago there was a massive snowstorm - over a metre of snow at Chirivel. A garage roof collapsed trapping and seriously injuring people. The help that was sent could not get through because the A92 was blocked. Snowploughs were sent and got stuck. In the end the emergency was dealt with at a local level.

The authorities have plenty of emergency plans and staff - under the guise of the "protección civil". They also have available earth movers, heavy lifting equipment, fire and rescue, helicopters for evacuation, but all of these can be grounded or stranded by the weather conditions that they are needed for.

So - this is what we have to do in major events - help each other in local communities. When the worst of the situation has passed, then it may be possible to get help in from outside.

Hola,

Yes, i think that was what i was driving at, the use of a helicopter would be the only real viable option in our area, you see it all the time on the TV, just brings it home when it's nearer home.

Rex, perhaps you could ask for a position as some sort of Agony Uncle, even the Samaritans would hang up on you! Are you related to Joey on another well known forum?

Hello,

So mikeyj, are you saying that the "rambla" is the only actual roadway for some, there are no other smaller routes out from where they live, if so, we apologise. We merely meant those people that choose to live on a riverbed, know that it does flood, are always taking this risk.

Oh how we wish "International Rescue" was real!

Samaritans, you say, do the Spanish have such an organisation we wonder, we do have some time on our hands and have gathered some useful information in our lifetime........mmmmmmmm

I think there must be some sort of rescue available. In the U.K. the elderly had an alarm sytem in house, I should think there is something similiar here where the emergency services can be contacted. The elderly or unwell might do well to enquire at the town hall. There are air ambulances that are run by the spanish red cross. I think it would be wise for anyone living in an isolated area to find out every possible avenue of escape and help. It may take alittle leg work to find out but I would say it is vital.

Yes, it was the Rambla de Oria that flooded.

Luckily the grader was out the next day to tidy things up.
