We thought of buying a car in the UK to leave at our house in Spain as it cost so much in rental hire. Adding up the amount we spend on rental we thought it would be better in the long run to have our own car. If we buy a British car and drive it down, is there anything we need to do! someone said we may need to have Spanish plates? Or taking all that into consideration is it better to buy a car in Spain?

If the Uk car is here more than 183 days in any one year it will definately have to go onto Spanish plates. It would be a lot less hassle to buy a Spanish car.

Maybe a lot less hassle but also a lot more expensive.
50% higher than a second hand UK car.
Just a thought.

Before we went out to Spain, we bought a left hand drive car in the UK, it had just come over from Spain ironically and still had it's Spanish plates.
This was OK, until we came to register it. We found that the previous owner had registered it in another region of Spain, so our lawyer had to write to this other region to cancel this registration (and make sure all car taxes had been paid up) and then it had to be re-registered at Albox.
This didn't cost too much, it probably would have cost more if changing Uk plates over to Spanish.
We were lucky, everything had been paid up, but take care when cars change hands, some unscrupulous people may have defaulted on their car tax, which the new owner is then liable for when they take over the car.
I dont know how well the lhd UK outlets know Spanish road tax law - best to do some research on it. Like most Spanish bureaucracy, it takes a little unravelling.
