Hey everybody!

I am a second year anthropology student at the Queen's University of Belfast planning to come to Spain at the end of this month to carry out research for my dissertation and would love to speak to any English ex-pats out there who would be willing to help. I will be staying in Almanzora village near Albox and probably mainly speaking to English people who live there (if you live in Almanzora or know anybody who does, please get in touch/spread the word) but I would love to speak to anyone else in the surrounding area who is willing to talk to me too!

My topic is about the foods that English ex-pats like to eat (paella...or fish and chips?!) and I am planning to treat people to the occasional free lunch and practice my cooking skills so that we can discuss Spanish and English foods, whether people like to cook for themselves, how often they eat out, cook Spanish/English foods, whether they are willing to pay more for English foods such as HP sauce in the English supermarkets and so on.

I am hoping that this research will be a lot of fun and that I will learn a lot from people about what they think about Spanish and British cuisine and meet some interesting people!

Please do not hestitate to get in touch!

Many thanks :)

Gemma

Staying in AlmanSTARA  - you will definitely find a motley crue of ex-pats there

Ask them as well, why, when they are sat outside the bars they feel the need to stare at every car that goes past - its like they are watching a tennis match but personally I think they need to get a life.

It would also be interesting WHEN people have their meals. As you know, Spanish meal hours are different. Coffee break is more like “second breakfast” and Tea is called merienda. I suppose the meal hours are related to the degree of integration. If you have a job, you’re “condemned” to the Spanish times.

And the children that have school meals, how do they appreciate these? I know school meals can quite traditional, f.i. the heavy soups with garbanzo beans or lentils.

I’d be interested in what people have for breakfast. The traditional Spanish breakfast still consists in tostadas, bread with oil, cakes or biscuits with coffee, chocolat or milk.

Interesting subject!

“Calling all “English ex-pats”

Gemma, does this mean other ‘British’ people are excluded from your research ? ;)

Thanks Maria for that, I had considered some of those things you mentioned but it was very helpful :), I am hoping to talk to some children too to see what they think of Spanish school meals and what foods they might miss from home. My father will undoubtedly be bringing out tea bags even though it will be about 30 degrees every day!

and yes Puff (like the name lol) sorry - I should have said all British ex-pats really, to include people from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland also, it just seems that most are English!
